On March the 4th 1193 Saladin (Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb) died of a fever in Damascus, shortly after Richard I of England had left Palestine. Before his death he had given away all his money to the poor, leaving nothing to pay for his funeral. His body lies in a wooden sarcophagus, within a mausoleum built in the garden of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.
