The trial of Charles I, at the Guildhall, on the 27th of January, found him guilty of treason against the people of England. He was sentenced to death and on the 30th of January 1649, was executed on a scaffold built in front of the Banqueting House at Whitehall. The execution was delayed so that Parliament could pass a resolution making it a crime to proclaim a new King. Government passed to the English Council of State.
