Holy Spirit - Baginton, Warwickshire

This tracery window depicts the Holy Spirit in the form of a descending dove, set against a radiant field of blue glass and stylised rays of light. A scroll bearing the inscription “Peace in heaven & Glory in the highest” reinforces the window’s theological focus on divine presence, reconciliation, and praise.
The composition is deliberately simple and emblematic, relying on symbolic clarity rather than narrative detail. The dove is centrally placed and strongly silhouetted, its outstretched wings animated by careful glass painting and leading, while the surrounding blue ground creates a sense of depth and spiritual calm.
Dated 1932, the window is characteristic of Shrigley & Hunt’s early twentieth-century work, combining traditional Christian symbolism with a restrained modern sensibility. The emphasis on light, colour, and legibility allows the image to function effectively at a distance, particularly within its architectural role in the tracery. It forms a quiet but resonant complement to the larger nineteenth-century narrative windows elsewhere in the church, demonstrating continuity of devotional imagery across periods.
