Tamworth is situated on the banks of the river Tame, which is an important tributary of the River Trent. A settlement as been at Tamworth since Saxon times.
Tamworth Castle is a Norman motte and bailey fortification dating from the 11th century. The castle consisting of a shell keep and 12th century gate tower was extended in the 13th century to provide residential accommodation.
