The Hawker dragonflies, or, Darners in North America. These are medium to large dragonflies. Always on the move with a hawking flight in open spaces, frequently hovering over a spot. At rest they hang from branches.
The dragonflies are larger and more robust, and faster fliers than the damselflies (Zygoptera). The hindwing is broader than the forewing and they rest with their wings spread.
Commonly referred to as clubtail dragonflies, the Gomphidae family consists of 90 genera and 900 species.
This is the largest family of Odonata with over 1000 species, containing the Skimmers, Chasers, and Darters.
