This is the largest family of solitary wasps, of which there are 115 species in the UK. They have the common name of Digger Wasps as most species nest in the ground.

Sawflies differ from other Hymenoptera families by having a large connection between the thorax and abdomen. The common name comes from the saw like ovipositor, which the females use to cut into the plants where they lay their eggs.

This is a large family of wasps that contains all the social wasps and many of the solitary wasp species.

 

The nests of most species are made of mud, but some species chew plant fibres to form a kind of paper which they use to construct the nest.
