This 16th century limestone statue of the Madonna and Child is from the Champagne region of France, and is currently located in the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts France.

Reflecting a blend of late Gothic and early Renaissance artistic elements, and is likely have been part of a church altar. The Vigin Mary's robes are intricately carved, with detailed folds that cascade naturally, which is a hallmark of late Gothic sculpture. Jesus is rendered with tender interaction, emphasizing humanity and maternal affection which is typical of the Renaissance. Jesus holds a bunch of grapes which is a symbol of the Eucharist, referring to the wine as the Blood of Christ and foreshadowing his Passion. This iconography was particularly popular in French religious art during this era.
