God Creating Eve by Andrea Pisano - Florence
This sculpture of God Creating Eve (c1334-1343) is by Andrea Pisano. Originally one of the panels from a series decorating the Campanile (bell tower) of the Florence Cathedral, it is now housed in the Opera del Duomo in Florence.
This is a biblical depiction from Genesis 2:21–22, where God creates Eve from Adam's rib, highlighting the interaction between God and the first humans.
A bearded God is depicted standing on the left, long robes, reaching out with a gesture of blessing and creation. Eve emerges from the side of Adam, who lies on the ground. Eve is portrayed kneeling or rising, looking up at God in reverence and connection. Meanwhile Adam is shown in a relaxed, reclining posture, with his arm under his head, suggesting that he is either asleep or unconsciousness.
Trees and foliage frame the scene, referencing the Garden of Eden. The flowing drapery and expressive gestures are characteristic of Gothic sculpture
