St Nichoilas was noted for giving gifts which is why he is nowadays asoociated with Father Christmas. In this sculpture, at Chartres Cathedral, St Nicholas is giving money to to a poor man who's three daughters were about to be sold into slavery because he could not provide dowries for them.
